SC and Young Boys drew 1-1 on Thursday afternoon. Lukas Kübler got the equaliser for Freiburg.

Young Boys, top of the Swiss Super League going into the winter break, visited the Europa-Park-Stadion on Thursday for the final game ahead of the Christmas period. The two coaches agreed to play four quarters of 30 minutes.

Neither side were interested in a relaxed end to the year as they both got stuck in early on. The away side had the better chances in the opening stages, with Gabriele De Donno missing the target from close range. Manuel Gulde made a vital block against Joel Monteiro, who was otherwise clean through. The third chance for Young Boys resulted in the opening goal. Donat Rrudanhi’s curling strike found the back of the net from just outside the box.

The home team improved during the next 15 minutes. Lucas Höler had a dangerous shot deflected for a corner (42’). The resulting set-piece came to Lukas Kübler via Höler and his low shot found the target for the equaliser (43’). Yannick Engelhardt and Nils Petersen both had opportunities to give SC the lead before the half-time break.

One of five new Freiburg players for the second half, Kiliann Sildillia, almost made it 2-1 right away. Anthony Racioppi in the away goal just managed to parry his effort destined for the bottom corner. The remaining Freiburg players from the starting XI were taken off after 75 minutes. Maximilian Breunig then hit the post with his first touch (76’).

Maximilian Breunig, a striker for the U23s, was then denied twice by the excellent Dario Marzino five minutes before the end. That meant that the final game of 2022 ended 1-1. Freiburg will resume training on 2nd January.
