Ritsu Doan scored his second goal of the World Cup in a 2-1 win over Spain to help Japan book their place in the knockouts.
It took Ritsu Doan just three minutes to score after coming on at half time. The SC forward cancelled out Alvaro Morata’s opener with a shot from just outside the box (48’). This started a strong period of the game for Japan in which Ao Tanaka then gave them the lead six minutes later.
Japan defended resolutely to hold onto their 2-1 lead, which saw them top Group E with Spain finishing second. Japan will play Croatia on Monday (16:00 CET) and Spain will take on Morocco on Tuesday (16:00 CET).
Germany were knocked out despite a 4-2 win over Costa Rica. Matthias Ginter was brought on for his first World Cup minutes in injury time, while SC captain Christian Günter was unused throughout the tournament in Qatar.
