In a head-to-head battle between SC players at the World Cup in Qatar, Ritsu Doan equalised for Japan in their 2-1 win over Germany.
While Christian Günter and Matthias Ginter were unused substitutes in the first game in Group E, Ritsu Doan scored five minutes after coming off the bench to level proceedings.
The SC forward replaced Fortuna Düsseldorf’s Ao Tanaka in the 71st minute. He found the back of the net on the rebound from a shot saved by Manuel Neuer (76’). VfL Bochum’s Takuma Asano got Japan’s winner with seven minutes left to play. Ilkay Gündogan had put Germany ahead from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute.
Two more SC players could feature for the first time in the tournament tomorrow. Wooyeong Jeong’s South Korea will play Uruguay at 14:00 CET, and Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and Ghana will take on Portugal at 17:00 CET.
