Both Matthias Ginter (28) and Christian Günter (29) are heading to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. They were called up by head coach of the Germany national team, Hansi Flick.
The 2022 World Cup in the desert state of Qatar will be the third World Cup of Matthias Ginter’s career (46 international caps / 2 international goals). The 28-year-old was part of the side that won the tournament in 2014 in Brazil as well as the 2018 side that was disappointingly knocked out in the group stages in Russia. The Freiburg-born player did not get any game time in either of the two tournaments.
Christian Günter has 6 international appearances under his belt. “Gunni’s” international debut for Germany came in a friendly against Poland (0-0) back in 2014. He had to then wait more than seven years for his next international appearance. He was named to Germany’s 2021 Euros squad, but did not receive any game time. His most recent cap came on March 29th of this year during the friendly against the Netherlands that ended 1-1.
The 2022 World Cup kicks off on November 20th with hosts Qatar facing off against Ecuador. The final will take place on December 18th.
