Hungary international Attila Szalai will join SC Freiburg on loan from TSG Hoffenheim for the remainder of the 2023/24 season
Attila Szalai moved to the Bundesliga from Fenerbahce in summer 2023. Previously, the 1.92m-tall defender enjoyed stints at Apollon Limassol in Cyprus, Hungarian first-division side Mezőkövesdi SE and Rapid Wien. The 26-year-old, who can play either as a centre- or left-back, has featured in 218 games at professional level, in addition to making his way through the ranks of Hungary's youth set-up. He made his debut for his country's senior side in 2019.
"We have been able to find an excellent solution for our current situation. Attila has experience playing internationally and will be able to help us out right away," said Klemens Hartenbach. "With his robust stature and strength at winning duels, he can be a key component in any defence. We're very much looking forward to working together and are all working hard in order to achieve our joint aims."
Szalai said, "I have set my goals high for this year ahead of the upcoming European Championships in Germany and will always give my best. I'm very much looking forward to getting to know my new teammates and tackling the challenges that lie ahead of us together at SC."
Details of the loan move will remain undisclosed.
