The final international break of the calendar year has run its course. A number of SC players were away on international duty, with Michael Gregoritsch celebrating after netting for Austria.
The Germany national team put on a show for the Freiburg crowd when they clashed with Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Europa-Park Stadion in the Nations League. The fans in attendance got to witness seven goals, while welcoming back former SC goalkeeper Oliver Baumann and former goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg. Meanwhile, a number of SC players were off on duty across Europe and Asia with their respective national sides. Ritsu Doan once again featured for the Japan national team, who had two World Cup qualifiers scheduled against Indonesia and China. Japan won both matches, leaving them with 16 out of a possible 18 points so far in qualifying and well on course for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA. Doan was in the starting line-up to take on Indonesia, but did not play in China.
Austria looked to maintain their status as table-toppers in their Nations League group. Philipp Lienhart, Michael Gregoritsch and Junior Adamu faced Kazakhstan and Slovenia alongside their national teammates. Austria won the match against Kazakhstan 2-0, with Michael Gregoritsch one of the two goalscorers. They then drew 1-1- with Slovenia, meaning that Austria finished in second place in their Nations League group. A play-off in March now awaits them, when they will have a final chance of gaining promotion back to the top tier of the competition.
Florent Muslija and Kosovo had their match in Romania abandoned following anti-Kosovo chants from Romanian supporters shortly before the final whistle, leading to the away team deciding to leave the field of play. The result of the game is yet to be decided. Kosovo then narrowly won their Nations League match against Lithuania 1-0, although Muslija did not see any action. Eren Dinkci was called up for the Türkiye senior national team, but had to leave the camp early due to a knee injury.
The Germany U21 national team, whose squad once again included Noah Atubolu and Max Rosenfelder, won 3-0 in a friendly against Denmark. Rosenfelder made the starting line-up, while Atubolu had to leave the U21s’ camp early due to back problems. Another friendly then followed for the Germans in France. Rosenfelder, who once again started in central defence, faced club teammate Kiliann Sildillia, who was again called-up to the France U21s. Sildillia provided the assist for France’s stoppage-time equaliser during the 2-2 draw.
The France U21s’ first friendly was against Italy, a match that ended in a 2-2 draw, with Sildillia even scoring. Bruno Ogbus and Johan Manzambi were once again part of the Switzerland U20 national squad, as they took part in a friendly match against Czechia, losing in injury time.
The SC players remaining Freiburg used the opportunity that the international break presented for a friendly clash away to Karlsruher SC. The visitors emerged 1-0 victors, with Lucas Höler getting on the score sheet.
