SC Freiburg can confirm the Hungarian attacker has moved to Turkish Süper Lig side Galatasaray.
Roland Sallai joined SC in 2018 from APOEL FC and made 163 competitive appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals. During his time in Freiburg, the 27-year-old represented his nation Hungary at EURO 2020 and 2024. Galatasaray are the reigning Turkish champions and currently sit second in the Süper Lig. They will play in the UEFA Europa League this season.
“The team has constantly developed in recent years and Roland was an important part of that,” said board member for sport Jochen Saier. “Roland has flirted with the idea of leaving the club on a number of occasions in the past. Due to his contractual situation and the current structure of our squad, we weighed things up and agreed to the transfer. We would like to thank Roland for his commitment across six eventful years and wish him all the best in Istanbul.”
Sallai himself commented: “I had a great time in Freiburg. We were successful in the Bundesliga, reached a DFB-Pokal final in Berlin and played in Europe. I developed into a regular for my national team here and I would like to say thanks. I’ll always remember my spell at Freiburg as one that shaped my career.”
Details of the transfer will remain undisclosed.
