Berkay Yilmaz has signed his first professional contract with SC ahead of a loan move to second-tier side 1. FC Nürnberg.
Berkay Yilmaz arrived at Freiburg in summer 2020 from the youth set-up of partner club FC Radolfzell. Last season, the 19-year-old full-back played his first minutes at senior level. He made 13 appearances for SC’s second team in the third division (one goal, four assists) and reached the final of the Youth DFB-Pokal with the U19s. During the summer, Yilmaz played four games for Turkey at the European U19 Championship in Northern Ireland.
“Berkay has developed very well. Since there would be a lot of competition in his favoured position in the coming season, a loan to Nürnberg makes sense for all parties,” said SC sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. “With his footballing qualities and his mentality at the level they are, he can now develop further in Bundesliga 2. We will support him in every step.”
