SC Freiburg came out on top 6-2 against Hamburg SV after 140 minutes. Kyereh scored a brace in the final test ahead of the Bundesliga restarting. The other goalscorers for the club were Griefo, Gulde, Jeong and Petersen.

The furthest back of the four football pitches at the Santa Maria Polo Club was bustling with activity until shortly before kick-off. A tractor was carting advertising banners around, another was watering the pitch from a huge fertiliser tank. And at half past twelve on the dot, the pitch was buzzing with activity every minute of the game. Here’s just the first quarter of action to explain:

4th minute: Cross from Bakery Jatta – header by Robert Glatzel – 0-1 Hamburg.

7th minute: Jatta’s ricochet cross – alleged handball from Miro Muheim – penalty for Vincenzo Grifo – 1-1. Christian Streich, however, commented from the bench that the scene in the penalty area was a “joke”.

10th minute: Corner ball from Grifo – Manuel Gulde heads it into the back of the net – 2-1.

12th minute: Kyereh scores with a lop from 25 metres out – 3-1.

13th minute: Lighting-quick counterattack from Grifo and Christian Günter – Kyereh slots in to finish the attack off – 4-1.

After that, the tempo settled down to the level expected of a friendly. Michael Gregoritsch had the chance to score the next goal after half an hour. However, the next goal came from the opposition. Glatzel scored his second goal of the game with a beautiful flick to give Hamburg the equaliser (32’). Ritsu Doan twice missed the chance for a fifth Freiburg goal (43’, 44’).  So, both sides headed into halftime with a scoreline of 4-2.

Over 140 minutes on the pitch

The coaches had agreed in advance on two 45-minute matches plus an extra 50-minute match. A week before the Bundesliga match at VfL Wolfsburg, many Freiburg players got a full game in.

SC continued to set the tone in the second half with several good scoring opportunities. Gregoritsch missed the best of the lot with a penalty (58’).

Jeong comes on and scores

Freiburg made their first changes after 80 minutes. A new face to the game among several others: Wooyeong Jeong. And he immediately fitted in really well. After a beautiful combination in the box, the South Korean scored Freiburg’s fifth (86’). That was the final score after 90 minutes.

Christian Streich said after the game: "Of course we missed one or two chances. But everyone was very eager to get their legs moving, even the ones who came in."

Both teams started the rest of the game with almost completely new personnel. The agile Noah Weißhaupt, who earned Freiburg's third penalty. Nils Petersen confidently converted from the spot and got the team’s sixth goal at the 107th minute mark.

The boys in black remained committed. But they couldn’t manage to score another goal. After 140 minutes, the result was a 6-2 win against the second-placed team in the second division – marking a positive end to the training camp. Head coach Streich summed up his feelings from the game: "I am satisfied, it was great here. We had good conditions and were able to train well.”
