SC Freiburg made it two wins from two games on Saturday. New signing Michael Gregoritsch (71') scored the only goal of the game as Christian Streich's side defeated French Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennes 1-0.
In their second friendly of the day, SC Freiburg welcomed French first division team and Europa League participant Stade Rennes to the Europa-Park Stadion. In front of around 13,000 spectators, Streich's side were looking to build on the 3-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano a few hours prior.
To begin with, however, it was the visitors who started strongly. Mark Flekken was called into action in the second minute, saving an effort from Gaetan Laborde. Three minutes later, Romain Salin produced a save at the other end to deny Vincenzo Grifo. Grifo was then denied again by the Rennes number one. The goal wouldn't have stood, however; the Italian was deemed to be in an offside position upon receiving Maximilian Eggestein's pass (9').
Post prevents Freiburg lead
With new arrivals Matthias Ginter and Michael Gregoritsch in the starting eleven, Freiburg almost went ahead after 12 minutes. Some good link-up play between Grifo and Christian Günter down the left forced Noah Francoise into an interception which ricocheted back off the Rennes post.
The visitors, who featured former Freiburg player Baptiste Santamaria in midfield, finished an impressive Ligue 1 campaign in fourth place last season and performed well in the first half of Saturday’s game. Gaetan Laborde threated with a bicycle kick after a cross from the right, but defender Kiliann Sildillia was there to block (20').
Streich's side found it difficult to create many chances in what was a highly-tactical game. Maximilian Eggestein tried a powerful left-footed shot from around 15 metres on 39 minutes but did not pose any problems for Romain Salin and the scores remained 0-0 at the half time interval.
While Freiburg returned unchanged for the second half, the visitors made a host of substitutions. With chances still hard to come by at either end, Rennes' Serhou Guirassy failed to take one of the few opportunities when he missed from close range.
Gregoritsch scores on home debut
Freiburg began to seize more control of the match and eventually took the lead after 71 minutes. Sildillia crossed to Wooyeong Jeong, who laid on to Gregoritsch. The forward made no mistake from close range and opened the scoring.
The visitors responded well to falling behind; just two minutes later, Benjamin Bourigeaud tried an effort from the edge of the area but saw the ball rebound off the underside of the crossbar and bounce clear.
With time running out, Freiburg managed to see their lead through and emerge as 1-0 victors. Head coach Christian Streich said of the two friendlies: "I am not dissatisfied. We had a good sense of stability in both games. We won 3-0 and 1-0, but the opposition had chances in both games. You can't look too much into the victories."
