SC Freiburg will travel to face the record champions from Munich on Saturday (15:30 CET), in their final league match ahead of the upcoming international break.
Head coach Christian Streich’s side are still unbeaten after the first 10 matchdays of the season, having picked up 22 points in the process. SCF go into the game against the reigning champions sitting in third place. “We’re pleased that the players have been able to put our instructions into effect so far – that’s a testament to their quality,” said Streich.
After celebrating their first win at the newly-opened Europa-Park Stadion against Greuther Fürth last time out, SCF will now be looking to return home from Bavaria with points in hand. So far, the Breisgau side have only ever managed to take points off Bayern on three occasions, and are yet to win away to FCB. “I’ve always been very pleased with our performances in Munich over the last years. We have made things tough for them on a number of occasions. We are yet to win our first away game in Munich, but we always travel their feeling optimistic,” Streich said.
At the same time, the coach does not believe that the recent double-game week will have had a lasting impact on his players. “The team are feeling good, and we didn’t overwork them in training. I think the players are in a good spot at the minute,” said Streich. Despite Freiburg’s strong start to the season, FCB are still the clear favourites this weekend. “We want to pose a challenge for them and make things difficult for them,” said Streich.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann’s side are also coming off a tiring week, having beaten Benfica 5-2 in the Champions League group stages in mid-week, and securing their place in the next round.
SCF will be without Roland Sallai, Nils Petersen and Jonathan Schmid this weekend. The trio are yet to return to team training.
