SC Freiburg beat Karlsruher SC 2-1 in a friendly during the international break. Nishan Burkart and Lukas Kübler put Freiburg ahead at the break, as Dominick Kother got one back for KSC in the second half.
Karlsruhe’s BBBank Wildpark was bustling with activity on Thursday, not only because there was a friendly taking place on the club’s grounds. Construction work is still ongoing on the stadium, with one stand and the away terrace already finished. The new Karlsruher Stadion is expected to be finished by spring 2023.
Both clubs were only able to field dimished squads. In addition to the 13 players away on international duty, Christian Streich was also without Nico Schlotterbeck (muscle issues) and Lucas Höler (workload management). Nils Petersen, Jonathan Schmid and Kimberly Ezekwem also weren’t able to feature.
The friendly was therefore an opportunity for other players to showcase what they are capable of, with the trio of Noah Weißhaupt, Janik Haberer and Nishan Burkart managing to do so within a matter of minutes. Haberer got on the end of a cross from Weißhaupt, as Burkart was able to open the scoring from close range.
Haberer was then involved in Freiburg’s next chance of the game, as he just missed hitting the target. KSC were able to record a few chances of their own as the minutes passed, but failed to really challenge Benjamin Uphoff. Instead, Lukas Kübler would net the second goal of the game for SCF, after a pass from Keven Schlotterbeck.
Streich took off Kübler and Nicolas Höfler at the break, bringing on Enzo Leopold and Maximilian Eggestein. Uphoff then had to pull off a save in a one-on-one with Dominik Kother. Not long after, Kother would manage to finally beat Uphoff to put his side on the board (53’).
“Shoot!” was one command Streich let loose from the sidelines, as Leopold did well to put that into action. After a stunning solo run, his shot sailed narrowly wide of the target (79’). In the dying seconds of the match, Haberer sent a cross from Sildillia flying over the bar.
