Despite a lively performance, SC Freiburg ended the 2020/21season with a 3-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

After the hosts went in front from the spot through André Silva (62’), Wooyeong Jeong equalised in the 77th minute, but Almamy Touré (87’) and Ragnar Ache (90+2’) scored late to give Frankfurt the win. SC Freiburg finish the season on 45 points at tenth in the table.

"We started the game really well and had a few decent efforts on goal from Vincenzo Grifo. There were two or three moments to counterattack that we didn’t take advantage of," said Christian Streich, SCF head coach, after full time. "In the second half, Frankfurt had the better of the game in the first ten or twelve minutes. After that it was a totally even game again. I am absolutely satisfied with the performance, we matched them. It is a shame that we weren’t able to get at least a point."

Schmid and Haberer in the starting XI

Time to go out and give it everything one last time in 2020/21 – time to round off a strong season with a respectable performance. That was the name of the game for SC Freiburg ahead at the Deutsche-Bank-Park.

Following the 2-2 draw at home to record champions FC Bayern München, the Freiburg coaches opted for another back four, but changed the starting XI personnel in two positions. The suspended Roland Sallai was replaced by Jonathan Schmid at right mid, while Janik Haberer started up front alongside Nils Petersen. Ermedin Demirovic started on the bench against Frankfurt and watched an entertaining first half unfold.

Lively start in Frankfurt with a triple chance for Grifo

Just seconds after kick-off, Freiburg were marching towards goal courageously. Vincenzo Grifo got to the ball ahead of everyone on the left and put his shot just inches wide of the far post (1’). Moments later, the Italy international came close to putting SCF ahead again, as his shot from the edge of the area was hit a long way over the bar (5’). In the eleventh minute he came a lot closer, but the score remained 0-0.

At the back, Freiburg were faced with challenges of their own. Mark Flekken and Manuel Gulde were able to prevent the hosts from taking the lead.

Goalless at half time

SCF’s defensive display in the first half ensured that the teams went into the break at 0-0, as did a squandered chance at the other end.

Elias Bördner, making his debut between the sticks for Frankfurt, fumbled Grifo’s shot into the path of Lucas Höler, but the young keeper got to the ball before the rebound could be converted. The referee decided against awarding a penalty despite Höler being brought down in the process.

Lukas Kübler’s first-half injury dampened the spirits for Freiburg somewhat. The right back was winded by the arm of Martin Hinteregger in a fifty-fifty challenge and had to come off with breathing difficulties (34’).

Jeong levels the score

SC Freiburg emerged after half time unchanged. Despite good attacking play, they again struggled to find a good balance between effort and results. With just over an hour on the clock, the deadlock was broken by the hosts as the ball struck Janik Haberer on the arm and the referee pointed to the spot after consulting with VAR. André Silva stepped up and sent Flekken the wrong way to put Eintracht ahead in the 62nd minute. Christian Streich’s team continued to play well though, and scored a deserved equaliser with less than 15 minutes left to play.

Two late goals ensure 10th place

After several Freiburg attacks were unable to beat Bördner in the Frankfurt net, Nicolas Höfler’s pass found Wooyeong Jeong, who fired the ball into the top corner in the 77th minute. However, the goal proved to be little more than a consolation following two late strikes from the hosts.
Almamy Touré (87’) and Ragnar Ache (90+2’) struck twice in quick succession to keep all three points in Frankfurt, much to the annoyance of Freiburg.

"There were a lot of things I couldn’t make sense of today, but I have to accept it," said Christian Streich, who is in fact very pleased with his team’s overall performance over the last nine months. "The team had a really, really impressive season. I’m happy about that," the coach’s final words of the season.
