The 28 year old has been with the club since playing for the youth teams and has now made 284 appearances for the first team – only Andreas Zeyer, Karl-Heinz Schulz and Rolf Maier have taken to the pitch on more occasions in a Freiburg jersey. Christian Günter has been team captain since the current season.

“His spirit, performance, interpersonal skills and open manner with others single Christian out. He has been constantly improving on the pitch each and every year, always reaching a new, higher level,” says sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. “Christian Günter is an unbelievably important player and person for us in our everyday teamwork, which is why we’re so very excited to continue on the Freiburg way together.”

Christian Günter himself says: “I always have the feeling that things are progressing here and my personal development as well as that of the team has a long way to go still. With this feeling, I want to continue as captain. It’s also very worthwhile to persue your job and your passion at home. It just fits.”
