SC Freiburg have signed Maximilian Eggestein from Werder Bremen.
The 24-year-old joined the north German team in 2014, scoring 14 goals and setting up a further 21 in 181 competitive appearances. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes in all three Bundesliga 2 matches so far this season, and scored the winning goal away at Fortuna Düsseldorf (3-2). Eggestein has played for Germany U21s on 16 occasions and was called up to the senior squad in March 2019 for the first time.
“We have, of course, been following Maxi for a few years. The way he plays and thinks on the pitch is ideal for SC. He plays calmly and intelligently so he often gets himself into good scoring positions,” said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. “He has just gone through a difficult period with Werder but we are really glad that the move worked out at such short notice and we are excited to tackle the challenges that lie ahead of us together.”
Maximilian Eggestein himself said: “Saying goodbye to Bremen after ten years was really hard but I am happy to be here and to be starting out on a new adventure. I think that Freiburg are a good fit for me in a sporting sense and I have a great feeling after my conversations with the board. Freiburg are also undergoing big development ahead of the move to a new stadium, so I’m ready to be a part of that process.
Maximilian Eggestein will wear the No. 8 shirt for SC Freiburg. Both parties have agreed to keep the details of the transfer undisclosed.
