SC Freiburg will play their first three Bundesliga home games of the 2021/22 season at the Dreisamstadion.
SC Freiburg has worked tirelessly to try and be able to host their first home fixture of the 2021/22 season (against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday 21st August, 15.30 CEST) at the new stadium, despite COVID-19 restrictions which have stalled the progress of the project so far, particularly in the electrical, media and computing sectors. However, reoccurring issues can no longer be fully compensated for, despite great efforts to achieve this.
After considering several different options, it was decided that the first Bundesliga matchday to take place in the new stadium will be against RB Leipzig. This fixture is scheduled to take place between 15th and 17th October 2021, with the DFL yet to set the exact date. The upcoming international break will allow SC Freiburg the time it needs to organise the move and carry out necessary operational and functional tests in the new stadium.
This date was set because SC Freiburg’s primary aim is to ensure a safe and smooth matchday experience for all parties (spectators, players, coaching staff, support staff, media and TV production, sponsors, service providers and security). In the coming weeks, the club will mainly focus on securing TV coverage as well as all other IT and operational matters which are pertinent to matchdays.
The first game to be played in the stadium will be a friendly match that will take place during this international break.
Three additional farewell matches at the Dreisamstadion
Because of the move-in date being pushed back to October, the SC fans now have three more opportunities to say goodbye to the Dreisamstadion. This is because the SC side will play their first three home games of the 2021/22 season there, against Borussia Dortmund, 1. FC Köln (Saturday 11th September, 15.30 CEST), and FC Augsburg (Sunday 26th September, 17.30 CEST). The team will also continue to train at the Schwarzwaldstraße site for the time being.
This will not impact the U23’s schedule whatsoever. The club’s second team, who continue their training at Freiburg’s academy, will play their first three 3. Liga games of the season in the Dreisamstadion as planned. The women’s team’s move to the Dreisamstadion, where they will play their home matches (Women’s Bundesliga) as well as use the nearby training facilities, has however been postponed until the men’s first team have completed their move into the Stadion am Wolfswinkel.
Tickets for the matches at the Dreisamstadion
SC plans to allocate tickets for the three games at the Dreisamstadion through a lottery system made up of existing season ticket holders and members, keeping in mind the current Coronavirus regulations which allow for partial capacity at fixtures. This mirrors what was done for the home game against VfL Wolfsburg in the 2020/21 season.
Season tickets for the upcoming season are currently being allocated, and will be made available when the move to the Stadion am Wolfswinkel is complete and the ground is permitted to host at full capacity.
